Beside the spot

Start of Los Lances beach, beside the path connecting to the Isla de las Palomas in Tarifa. With easterly wind, the island acts as a barrier and creates flat water in its lee — one of the few spots in the Strait where you can ride in true flatwater conditions.

Warning: if you stray out of the island's shelter, the powerful Strait of Gibraltar currents will strip your wind and drag you offshore. This is not a protocol warning — there are rescues every season.

Wind conditions
Works exclusively with easterly (E-NE) winds, between 20 and 40 knots. Westerly wind does not generate the required shelter and riding is exposed to Strait swell. On strong levante days (above 30 knots) the flat zone is wider, but the exit towards the Strait becomes more dangerous.

Best season
Easterly wind predominates in spring (March–June) and autumn (September–October). In summer it alternates with westerly. The spot can be ridden year-round whenever the levante is established.

Recommended level
Experienced kiters only: solid body drag, self-rescue and current-reading skills required. Not recommended for intermediate riders even when the water is flat — managing the risk zone demands fast decisions.

Local regulations
The Isla de las Palomas is a military installation — do not approach its shores. Los Lances follows Tarifa's beach zoning rules: designated kite zone marked at the start of the beach, separated from the swimming area. Respect the buoy lines and the presence of windsurfers, especially in the entry and exit channel.

How to get there
From Tarifa town centre, head towards the port and Guzmán Castle. Continue along the promenade to the start of Los Lances beach (first access point after the sailing club). Free parking beside the beach, usually available except in August.
